Android Sync Issues after Applying Microsoft Exchange 2010 SP1

MWahl | November 10, 2010 | 7:31 pm

It is true, like many others if you applied SP1 to our Microsoft Exchange server you probably have angry Android users who are unable to connect with exchange server. Thanks to  laur.ie for the fix on.

  1. Download the 2.2 stock Email.apk from here using the Android browser. Don’t attempt to install it, let it go in to your download folder on your SD card.
  2. Open a terminal on your device. I use ConnectBot. Gain root using “su”
  3. Run: mount -o remount,rw /system
  4. Run: mv /system/app/Email.apk /sdcard/backup_Email.apk
  5. Run: cp /sdcard/download/Email.apk /system/app
  6. Reboot for good measure
  7. Set up your sync

Windows Live Writer plugins

MWahl | November 9, 2010 | 9:19 pm

I have been using Windows live for a long time. I have recently started using the Live Writer and I have to say and I really impressed. I recently started to experiment with  the many plugins available. One of the plugins I found useful was the Twitter Notify plugin. You install a new plugin, simply open Windows Live Writer, navigate to manage blog options, choose plugins. If you have no plugins, select get plugins online at the bottom, then search for what you are interested in and following the simple steps!

how-to-disable-windows-file-security

MWahl | November 1, 2010 | 8:26 pm

With the updated security in Windows, users and administrators may no longer be able conduct certain tasks within Windows such as download and extract ZIP files or download and install patches (Microsoft or otherwise).

Common symptoms are when a user or administrator saves or accesses a file which Windows has deemed a security are popups stating, “Windows found that this file is potentially harmful” and “To help protect your computer, Windows has blocked access to this file”, additionally giving a link to instructions that do not pertain to the issue.

Below are instructions for resolving this issue.

Instructions

1.Open the Group Policy Editor

1.If on a local PC/Laptop, go to RUN and type GPEDIT.MSC and click OK.

2.If on a Domain computer, open the Group Policy Management Tool from the Administrative Tools in the Start Menu.

2.Browse to the following:
USER CONFIGURATION \ ADMINISTRATIVE TEMPLATES \ WINDOWS COMPONENTS \ ATTACHMENT MANAGER

3.Set the DEFAULT RISK LEVEL FOR FILE ATTACHMENTS to LOW RISK.

4.Set the INCLUSION LIST FOR HIGH RISK FILE TYPES as follows.

NOTE: The file extension is “.____” (four underscores).

5.Set the INCLUSION LIST FOR MODERATE RISK FILE TYPES as follows.

NOTE: The file extension is “.____” (four underscores).

6.Set the INCLUSION LIST FOR LOW FILE TYPES as follows.

NOTE: The file extensions are:
.ade;.adp;.asx;.bas;.bat;.chm;.cmd;.com;.cpl;.crt;.exe;.hlp;.hta;.inf;.ins;.isp;.js;.jse;.lnk;.mdb;.mde;.msc;.msi;.msp;.mst;.pcd;.pif;.prf;.reg;.scf;.scr;.sct;.shb;.shs;.url;.vb;.pdf;.ace;.arc;.arj;.bh;.cab;.fea;.fzs;.gz;.tgz;.jar;.lha;.lzh;.pak;.pk3;.rar;.tar;.uue;.uu;.enc;.xxe;.z;.zoo;.zip

7.Set the TRUST LOGIC FOR FILE ATTACHMENTS to PREFERRING THE FILE TYPE.

8.Enable DO NOT PRESERVE ZONE INFORMATION IN THE FILE ATTACHMENTS.

9.Disable HIDE MECHANISMS TO REMOVE ZONE INFORMATION.

10.Disable NOTIFY ANTIVIRUS PROGRAMS WHEN OPENING ATTACHMENTS (most antivirus programs know when this happens anyways).

To apply the policy updates, go to RUN and type “GPUPDATE /FORCE”. If asked to reboot or logout, do so

View The Security of an NTFS Folder

MWahl | July 13, 2010 | 9:18 pm

Often times this isnt a big deal if there are only a few people or groups, but when there are a lot of people and groups its nice to use the two commands to pump out the info,

To List the security of a folder

From a command prompt type the following,
C:\>cacls "D:\Business Development"
D:\Business Development BUILTIN\Administrators:(OI)(CI)F
DomainName.COM\UserName:(OI)(CI)C

To List the security of a folder and all sub content.

From a command prompt type the following,

C:\>cacls "D:\Business Development" /T

If you need a list of the members of a Security Group

From a command prompt on a Domain Controller type the following,
C:\>net group "Business Development" >Report.txt
