Meet the Roku

MWahl | November 9, 2010 | 8:43 pm

I think without a doubt this is the future of entertainment for us all.

Roku is a little box that allows you to instantly stream tons of entertainment on your TV. Watch movies and TV shows from Netflix, Hulu Plus (coming this Fall) or Amazon VOD, listen to music on Pandora, catch the latest ballgame, and more — it’s all available whenever you want it.

Exchange 2010 SP1: Database Integrity checking

MWahl | November 9, 2010 | 1:41 pm

In Exchange 2010 SP1, ISInteg is no longer a standalone program.

The functionality provided by the ISInteg tool has been rolled into two new Exchange Management Shell cmdlets:

New-MailboxRepairRequest
New-PublicFolderDatabaseRepairRequest

These new ISInteg cmdlets come with some cool new functionality!
The cmdlets work with the database mounted. It’s no longer required to unmount the database to perform an integrity check or fix database errors.
You can repair logical corruption at the mailbox level.
You can fix corrupt search folders.
You can fix the Provisional Fid.
You can fix Aggregate Counts.

More info….

MWahl | November 7, 2010 | 7:44 pm

If is a link below to all the other cool things about SQL DBMail, but I want to highlight the fact that within the msdb database there is table which contains all the emails sent out from DBMail.

Logging. Database Mail logs e-mail activity to SQL Server, the Microsoft Windows application event log, and to tables in the msdb database.

Troubleshooting an issue and wish you could see the screen?

MWahl | November 7, 2010 | 7:20 pm

We have all been there, someone is having an issue and we wish we could just see their screen. There are plenty of expensive solutions and a few free ones. I personally like https://join.me/, which offers free screen sharing. Have the person who needs your help go to https://join.me, click share and follow the easy steps on the screen. They will get a code, which they can email to you the guru or you can visit https://join.me, and choose join.

how-to-disable-windows-file-security

MWahl | November 1, 2010 | 8:26 pm

With the updated security in Windows, users and administrators may no longer be able conduct certain tasks within Windows such as download and extract ZIP files or download and install patches (Microsoft or otherwise).

Common symptoms are when a user or administrator saves or accesses a file which Windows has deemed a security are popups stating, “Windows found that this file is potentially harmful” and “To help protect your computer, Windows has blocked access to this file”, additionally giving a link to instructions that do not pertain to the issue.

Below are instructions for resolving this issue.

Instructions

1.Open the Group Policy Editor

1.If on a local PC/Laptop, go to RUN and type GPEDIT.MSC and click OK.

2.If on a Domain computer, open the Group Policy Management Tool from the Administrative Tools in the Start Menu.

2.Browse to the following:
USER CONFIGURATION \ ADMINISTRATIVE TEMPLATES \ WINDOWS COMPONENTS \ ATTACHMENT MANAGER

3.Set the DEFAULT RISK LEVEL FOR FILE ATTACHMENTS to LOW RISK.

4.Set the INCLUSION LIST FOR HIGH RISK FILE TYPES as follows.

NOTE: The file extension is “.____” (four underscores).

5.Set the INCLUSION LIST FOR MODERATE RISK FILE TYPES as follows.

NOTE: The file extension is “.____” (four underscores).

6.Set the INCLUSION LIST FOR LOW FILE TYPES as follows.

NOTE: The file extensions are:
.ade;.adp;.asx;.bas;.bat;.chm;.cmd;.com;.cpl;.crt;.exe;.hlp;.hta;.inf;.ins;.isp;.js;.jse;.lnk;.mdb;.mde;.msc;.msi;.msp;.mst;.pcd;.pif;.prf;.reg;.scf;.scr;.sct;.shb;.shs;.url;.vb;.pdf;.ace;.arc;.arj;.bh;.cab;.fea;.fzs;.gz;.tgz;.jar;.lha;.lzh;.pak;.pk3;.rar;.tar;.uue;.uu;.enc;.xxe;.z;.zoo;.zip

7.Set the TRUST LOGIC FOR FILE ATTACHMENTS to PREFERRING THE FILE TYPE.

8.Enable DO NOT PRESERVE ZONE INFORMATION IN THE FILE ATTACHMENTS.

9.Disable HIDE MECHANISMS TO REMOVE ZONE INFORMATION.

10.Disable NOTIFY ANTIVIRUS PROGRAMS WHEN OPENING ATTACHMENTS (most antivirus programs know when this happens anyways).

To apply the policy updates, go to RUN and type “GPUPDATE /FORCE”. If asked to reboot or logout, do so
