Google Voice

admin | July 29, 2009 | 8:12 pm

Head over to voice.google.com , and request an invite. I requested an account about 2 weeks ago and just was notified today that I could join. So after signing up for my free phone number, i was then about to configure forwarding to my two mobile phones and my office phone and my house phone. When my google number is called all of my forward phones ring!! The international and long distance rates were very good, from within the google portal, i was able to select what number i wanted to call and then Select a phone, two mobile phones and my office phone and my house phone that i wished to use to take the call.

ReactOS

admin | July 26, 2009 | 9:12 pm

ReactOS is a free, modern operating system based on the design of Windows XP/2003. Written completely from scratch, it aims to follow the Windows® architecture designed by Microsoft from the hardware level right through to the application level. This is not a Linux based system, and shares none of the unix architecture.

More on the Google Chrome OS…

admin | July 20, 2009 | 9:56 pm

There has been a lot of coverage on the announcement of google operating system. I have not seen a screen shot of the proposed operating system, but I have to wonder is there a need for this, haven’t we heard or seen this type of idea in the past? For me the ideas of a computer booting to an Internet browser doesn’t sound all that appealing. I know that there are a lot of apps online such as GMail, google docs, etc. I know that there are users out there that will still have a desire to use locally ran apps. I know also that the amount of storage needed locally is diminishing as the amount of storage in the cloud is capable of hosting all sorts of user data. There is no question that the Chrome  OS will be something to run and experiment with, but with Win 7 around the corner, Apples OSX, ubuntu, SUSE, it seems hard to believe there could be room for another OS. Goggles efforts in my opinion would be better spent working on developing a common platform for Windows and OSX to coexist on.

Always have at least two copies…maybe three

admin | July 20, 2009 | 9:46 pm

Have you ever made a small change and found yourself needing to go back? Today it is fairly simple to use operating system backups to perform incremental or full backups. These are great, but if you lose the operating system you might be out of luck.

For the most part, I tend to build the operating system, make a base image( see my post on using drive snapshot with winpe), which I usually store locally on the server, and  upload a copy via ftp to an off site location. There are also applications available(syncback) that can upload only changes made and upload those via ftp. This are usually small changes such as gallery updates, database updates, and they can be scheduled to happen when you are at work or asleep. Depending on the amount of disk space available, you could even use external storage or nas device, having a copy of the system state can be a life saver. With windows server 2008, this type of backup is actually created as a virtual hard drive.

As Always the Desktop Manager 5.0 software handles everything from synchronization, device  backup and application loading from your Windows PC to your BlackBerry. Since the previous version there has been the ability to easily transfer your data from an existing blackberry to a new blackberry with just a few clicks. Backing up and restoring data is also done with a few simple clicks.

Will IE 8 be the last microsoft internet explorer?

admin | July 19, 2009 | 6:20 pm

From the rumblings, it sounds like the Internet explorer from Microsoft as we have known it for years will be like the “Gazelle”, a research project conducted by Microsoft.

Today users are using  web browsers very differently than they did a few years ago. Instead of viewing simple static web pages, today  users are playing games, using social networkingsites and all sorts of other rich content sites.

So would it be possible for the browser to be more like its own operating system to handle the rendering of the rich pages of today?
